THIS IS A CROSSBAR

Evening Literary Club

Tuesday, January 16 at 6 pm to 7:30 pm (signup deadline was 3 pm, Jan 12)
home of Tom and Fran Zaniello, 1610 D St. SE, 8 steps

In January, the Afternoon and Evening book clubs will read The Sympathizer: A Novel (2015, 385 pages) by Viet Thanh Nguyen. The author, who was born in Vietnam and raised in this country, has given us, in this important book, a rare Vietnamese perspective on the war and its aftermath. The Sympathizer is a complex and far-ranging book, both thriller and social satire—what the New York Times calls a “rich narrative stew." The main character is a refugee, soldier, spy, and film consultant! The book won 5 writing awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. It includes a gripping description of the fall of Saigon, and will have a particular resonance for those of us who have been watching the recent Vietnam series on PBS.
