Evening Literary Club

Tuesday, November 14 at 6 pm to 7:30 pm (signup deadline was 12 pm, Nov 13)
Home of Tom and Fran Zaniello, 1610 D St. SE, 8 steps

In November, the Evening Literary Club will read Colin Woodard’s American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America (2011, 371 pp). Woodard’s book comes highly recommended by many Village readers. One noted that it was “the best book she read this year." Woodard’s thesis argues that the US can be divided into 11 “nations," like-minded communities whose dominant cultures explain everything from current voting behaviors to their beliefs on social issues and the role of government. Woodard, a journalist and author of several books, explores both the historical development of these cultures and provides some fascinating recent statistics which highlight their differences. Given our recent election, and the stark divisions we’re currently feeling in our country, Woodard’s thesis should provoke some especially interesting discussion.
